A young Torquay chef has won a top local catering award.
Calum Williams, trainee chef at Living Coasts, has been recognized by the Torbay Hospitality Association.
The Michael Chapman Award was instigated in 1999 to honour Michael Chapman, chairman of the Torbay Hospitality Association in 1946 and 1960 and president between 1976 and 1996. The prize is awarded annually to the best NVQ level 3 hospitality and catering student at South Devon College.
The award was made at the Torbay Hospitality Association AGM on Wednesday 12th December at the Livermead House Hotel, Torquay.
In 2006 Calum won the coveted title of South Devon College Apprentice of the Year.
Calum, 18, works in the kitchens at Living Coasts and also attends South Devon College. He has been praised by his lecturers for his commitment, skill and reliability.
Calum said: “I am very proud – it is a great achievement. One day I want to be a Head Chef in a top restaurant.”
Gordon Oliver, Chairman of the Torbay Hospitality Association, said: “To compete in a global hospitality market it is vital that we encourage talented, highly skilled individuals to be part of our industry. South Devon College is a real centre of excellence with a fantastic national reputation. The youngsters who participate on courses there receive outstanding tuition and are able to work locally in a dynamic hospitality environment. The Torbay Hospitality Association is delighted to recognise talent and hard work through our awards and although the awards themselves rightly go to the youngsters, they would not be possible without the vital contribution of the college and local employers such as Living Coasts.”
