Three students from the catering, hospitality and tourism section at South Devon College have received prestigious accolades from the Torbay Hospitality Association.
Association president Mrs Sylvia Rew, John Cowie, a previous recipient of the Paul Award, and Helen Marshall, section head of catering and hospitality at the college, presented the nominated students with their awards.Helen Marshall said: "I am delighted that the association is able to support and encourage the students' success. It is fantastic their achievements are recognised within the industry and we warmly welcome employer involvement in our curriculum."
The Paul Scholarship Award, set up in memory of Mr Paul, chairman of the association in 1952, was awarded to student Nathan Hole as the most promising young manager following the foundation degree in hospitality management.
Nathan has had a variety of part-time positions within the industry, providing valuable work experience and successfully gained a work placement at a prestigious hotel in Bath during the summer holidays.
The award of £500 will assist Nathan to continue with his higher education studies and to go on to study for an honours degree in hospitality management at the University of Plymouth.
The Michael Chapman Award was presented to Callum Williams in recognition of being the most progressed NVQ level 3 craft student.
Currently in his third year of the advanced apprenticeship programme at the college, Callum has already been promoted to second chef to support his supervisory skills and further develop his confidence.
He has greatly benefited from the support provided by his employer and mentor Adam Dickson at the Azure Restaurant at Living Coasts, Torquay.
Advanced catering craft diploma student Josh Randall received the THA Award for demonstrating outstanding personal motivation and commitment throughout the course.
Josh has progressed from the NVQ level 1 and is working towards the level 3 qualification in professional cookery and level 2 in patisserie and confectionery.
With plans to enter the Salon Culinaire at Hotelympia in February, Josh will undoubtedly receive national recognition for his excellent culinary skills.
The annual awards ceremony was held at the Livermead House Hotel in Torquay.
