Showbiz razzmatazz kicked off one of Torbay's biggest tourism events.
Mayor Nick Bye was joined by two leggy Princess Theatre showgirls for the launch of Torbay Hospitality Association's trade fair yesterday at the Belgrave Hotel.A record 40 traders set up stalls at the fair, which brought together a wide selection of organisations aimed at aiding the tourism industry.
Mr Bye said: "There's a real buzz here. It's great to see such enthusiasm. Let's all work together for the betterment of the Bay.
"Torbay's got so much to offer, and people get more for their money if they holiday in this country."
It was the first time Torbay Hospitality Association (THA) had combined its trade fair with its general meeting.
In the afternoon, big-hitting speakers from the Regional Development Agency and South West Tourism spoke about the ways Torbay can boost its tourism opportunities.
There was also the launch of THA's annual 60-page brochure, which has been sent all around the country.
Thirty thousand copies have been printed, with a further 25,000 to be produced if demand meets expectations.
The brochure was sent out last Friday, and by Friday evening Betty and Robert MacDonald, at Abingdon House in Torquay, had received an inquiry.
Betty said: "They wanted to stay with us in February. We're very pleased. The brochure is marvellous - bigger and better than before, so it shows up more."
Among the stalls on show at the Belgrave Hotel were wine producers, food sellers, Torbay Development Agency, banks and attractions.
Speaking at the event, Gordon Oliver, chairman of THA, said: "I think we have a record turnout today and I hope you all benefit from it."
Teresa Butto, vice-president of THA, said the trade show was made all the more important because it is now the only one of its kind in Torbay.
She added: "Look at the turnout. We've had more people this year than every before. The fact that so many are here shows that they get something out of it."
