The Brixham Trawler Race, which has been running for almost 100 years, was held in Torbay on Saturday June 21st. Despite fears that this may have been the last race of kind because of increasing fuel costs John Travers, secretary of the Board of Brixham Trawler Race Association, stated that the committee planned to continue the race in 2009.
Whilst the race this year was reduced to one lap intead of the normal two, 23 boats raced around the 16 mile course including Hibernia, a mussel dredger from Ireland, and two boats from Holland. In a moving and spectacular protest against fuel prices the boats crossed the finishing line in formation, many of them displaying banners.
